Davidson Public Art Commission Launches Banner Project: Area artists invited to submit designs

Banner in Town of Davidson

The Davidson Public Art Commission is excited to announce the launch of a new banner project. In solidarity with recent national and local events- both tragic and inspiring- the project will line the main corridor to and through town with a variety of banners illustrating key ingredients of strong communities and our best selves: Respect, empathy, justice, equality, equity, love, belonging, inclusion, unity, peace, and understanding.

The project aligns itself with the Town of Davidson’s strategic plan which states, “Davidson remains committed to controlling our own destiny as a distinct, sustainable, and sovereign small town. Our sense of community is rooted in citizens who respect each other; in racial and socioeconomic diversity; and in pedestrian and bicycle orientation; all in the presence of a small liberal arts college. Our history and character guide our future.”

Artists of all ages who are North Carolina residents with an affiliation with either the town or Davidson College (past or present) are invited to make the aforementioned theme come alive through the creation of beautiful images that can ultimately be printed on 20” x 45.5” banners for public insight and enjoyment. Artist submission requirements and further details about the project may be viewed on the project webpage here.

The deadline for artwork submission is December 1, 2020 at which time the Davidson Public Art Commission, as well as outside jurors, will review the applications.  Artists who are selected will be notified by December 18, 2020.  Banners will be displayed on light poles along Griffith and Main Streets in Davidson beginning in early 2021 and remaining on view for up to one year.
