“We are so pleased to announce the installment and dedication of a new sculpture in town in April,” said Sherry Malushizky, chair of the Davidson Public Art Commission.  Sculpture artist Douwe Blumberg will be in town the week of April 13 to install the new “Dance of Life” sculpture. This newest addition to Davidson’s public art is given in honor of Patricia Tucker Knox, through a generous contribution by her brother, J. Stanley Tucker, the Arts and Science Council, and citizens of Davidson.

On Friday, April 17, citizens are invited to an Artist Talk by Douwe Blumberg at 6:00 p.m. in the Davidson Town Hall board room, which will lead into a Public Art Master Plan Workshop from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the same location.  Citizens will be asked where they would like to see public art in the future, will get information about funding the public art program, and will see examples of public art in other locales.  The members of the public art commission will be on hand to answer questions. Citizens are invited to the “Dance of Life” Dedication On Saturday, April 18 at 10:00 a.m. next to Davidson Town Hall.

Also on Friday, April 17, we are partnering with DavidsonLearns to offer a “sculpture walk.”  The group will meet in front of town hall at 7:00 p.m. to hear Davidson College art professor Dr. C. Shaw Smith discuss public art in town and will later take a trolley to Davidson’s campus for a tour of their sculptures.  Refreshments will be provided on the trolley.  There is no need to register for this event – simply show up!

Art on the Green is Davidson’s largest annual arts festival, bringing thousands of citizens and visitors to Davidson’s Main Street and town green on Saturday, April 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, April 19 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.  This juried art show spotlights many of the region’s finest artists in a weekend-long celebration.  Mark it on your calendar! Over 50 artists from the Lake Norman region, North Carolina, Virginia, Massachusetts, and Maine will be joining us to showcase and sell their creations in all types of media: sculpture, watercolor, photography, wood, glass, ceramics, etc. Patrons can stroll around the green to enjoy amazing art from a wide variety of talented regional artists, listen to live music, and enjoy local cuisine.

On Saturday, April 18, we are partnering with DavidsonLearns to offer a “tree walk” led by former Davidson College Superintendent of Grounds Irvin Brawley.  The group will meet on the library stage at 10:00 a.m. and will walk around Davidson College’s campus and the town for about 1.5 hours. There is no need to register for this event.
