Civics 101

We still have space in our evening Civics 101 class, so if you are interested in learning about Davidson’s town government, we highly recommend that you register. All of the information is available on our website at www.townofdavidson.org/Civics101. We hope you’ll join us!
Citizen Survey
A total of 1,600 randomly selected, geographically diverse Davidson residents received the Citizen Survey during the week of January 14. Only the residents randomly selected are able to participate. Results will be used to help guide decision-making for the town. We encourage those selected to complete the survey by the middle of February.

What's Next workshop

Comprehensive Plan
We had over 170 people attend the Conversation on What’s Next workshop on Thursday, January 17, and we got lots of great public input for our plan. If you missed the workshop, please go to www.whatsnextdavidson.com to complete our second survey by February 3. Please mark your calendar for April 1-3 for our multi-day plan creation workshop. Details will follow as we get closer to the dates.

Highway 73
NCDOT is hosting a public meeting on the NC Highway 73 widening project on January 28 at Lake Norman Church of Christ, 17634 Caldwell Station Road in Huntersville from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. This is a Hwy 73 widening project that will go from NC 115 to US 29 Concord.  NCDOT has tentatively scheduled to start construction in 2022 and take three years to complete. This project scope also includes improvements to the Davidson-Concord Road, June Washam Road, and Highway 73 intersections. Please attend to share your input.

2019 Revaluation
Revaluation notices will be mailed to nearly 400,000 Mecklenburg County property owners beginning this Wednesday, January 23. In addition, MeckReval.com, the property assessment website, will be updated with the new values starting Thursday, January 24, so please look up your property.

K9 Maky

K9 Maky
Davidson Police K9 Maky has officially retired after five years of service with the Davidson Police Department.  Maky served as a dual-purpose narcotics and patrol dog, provided and continually cared for by the generous and caring citizens of the Town of Davidson.  After arriving from the Netherlands, police K9 Maky began her service in September 2013.  During her career, she has worked with local, state, and federal agencies to sniff out illegal drugs, track felons, search for evidence, and provide dedicated protection to her fellow officers.  She was, no doubt, the citizens’ favorite police officer. Her friendly and social demeanor was shared with hundreds of adults and children during demonstrations and presentations she and her handler, Sgt. Greg Frostbutter, conducted.  Maky is a recent cancer survivor, and we wish K9 Maky a safe, relaxing retirement at home with the partner she has worked with for the past five years.  We thank her for her faithful service to the citizens of the Town of Davidson and to her fellow officers.

QUARTERLY COMMISSIONER REPORTS - Each board member provided an update on the outside board to which they have been appointed:  
Commissioner Autumn Rierson Michael gave an update on the Centralina Council of Governments (CCOG): The CCOG has a new executive director. They are hosting a regional conference in March at UNC-Charlotte. For more information, please visit: http://www.centralina.org.

Commissioner Matthew Fort gave an update on the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce: For a listing of all upcoming events, please visit: https://www.lakenormanchamber.org/

Commissioner Jim Fuller gave an update on Visit Lake Norman: They are an award-winning travel and tourism organization. Information on upcoming events is on their website at https://www.visitlakenorman.org/

Commissioner David Sitton gave an update on the Lake Norman Regional Economic Development Corporation: There has been economic development in this region: The Yokohama Technical Center in Huntersville will employ 50 engineers when fully staffed, SPRiZZi Beverage Company will move into the former Michael Waltrip building and will employ 180 people once fully staffed, and the 500 acre Bryton Development in Huntersville is now home to Frankie’s Fun Park, as well as future Class A industrial space. 
He also gave an update on the North Mecklenburg Alliance: They received an overview from Gov. Cooper’s office on transportation in the state and region.

Commissioner Jane Campbell gave an update on the Lake Norman Transportation Commission:  They reviewed the draft of a locally administered projects policy to allocate discretionary funds, benefit from federal funds, and propose a schedule to propose, score and fund projects.
She also gave an update on the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization: The group reviewed the draft discretionary policy and received project and plan updates. Internships might be available in the future.

Mayor Rusty Knox gave an update on the Metropolitan Transit Commission: They meet on January 23. Gaston County representatives are advocating for light rail from Gaston County to the airport.

Mayor Rusty Knox thanked the Davidson Parks and Recreation Department for hosting a successful Martin Luther King Jr. Day event. We had over 150 people in attendance. Thank you to all who participated.

Consent items are non-controversial and routine items. Prior to the board's adoption of the meeting agenda, the request of any member to have an item moved from the consent agenda to old business must be honored by the board. All items on the consent agenda must be voted on and adopted by a single motion. All items were approved including:

  • Minutes from the September 20 Mini-retreat, December 4 Work Session and December 11 Regular Meeting.
  • Agreement to retire K9 Maky
  • Financing on purchase of Davidson Fire Department pumper apparatus
  • Directing the Town Clerk to investigate a voluntary contiguous annexation petition of 19905 Davidson-Concord Road
  • Tax Levy Adjustments: adjustment refund check requests from Mecklenburg County Assessor's Office for $6,639.97, on 19 parcels including interest and solid waste fee refunds on 5 parcels totaling $3,910.46.
  • Exempt the TeamSummit Foundation Twilight Racing Series from Section 54-1 of the Municipal Code on March 16 and November 2, 2019 in order to allow the consumption and sale of alcohol on the town-owned parking lot located adjacent to Summit Coffee contingent upon staff approval of the event

Historic Landmark Designation

Special Project Manager Dawn Blobaum discussed the appropriation of funds to landmark and survey properties. On October 22, 2018 we held a public information meeting regarding potential designation of landmark properties in Davidson.  Property owners with potential landmarks (determined by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historic Landmarks Commission) were notified of the meeting. Subsequent to the meeting, several property owners who are interested in designating their properties approached the staff of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historic Landmarks Commission (CMHLC) asking to move forward with the designation process.  The CMHLC would like to move ahead with three properties and consider studying several more. The properties under consideration are 310 Concord Road, built in 1898; 603 North Main Street, built in 1896 and remodeled in the 1920s; and 21525 Shearer Road, built in the 1930s. The Davidson Board of Commissioners voted to allocate $15,000 from the unassigned fund balance to fund survey and research reports on potential homes to be designated as landmarks. The cost to survey and research one property is approximately $3,500.

At the end of the public meeting, the board of commissioners entered into a closed session to consult with the Town Attorney on the lawsuit entitled Davidson Acquisition Company, et. al. v. Town of Davidson et. al.
