A Message from the Chief of Police


The Davidson Police Department strives to be a problem-solving organization.  Our interests are for the peace and safety of the public we serve.  We are continually seeking opportunities to engage in open dialogue and improve our relationships and department operations in order to maintain a safe environment for the residents, visitors, businesses, and students who make Davidson their home.  The Town of Davidson is a community which embraces walkability and bicycling, and so we ask that pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers have an increased awareness of the local speed limits, use the available crosswalks, and obey the laws.  Please be courteous and share the road.  Enjoy each day in Davidson, and let us know if and when we can be of assistance.

Overview


The Davidson Police Department consists of two divisions- Administration/Investigation and Patrol Operations.  

The Town of Davidson has experienced significant growth over the past several years, and the department is growing to meet those needs.  Within these police pages, you can get an idea for the different types of work the department does on any given day.  Using the links on the left side menu, you can find information about department assignments, events, and even inquire about a ride-a-long!

Information about the 9-1-1 System


The 9-1-1 Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) for the Town of Davidson is the CharMeck911/Communications Division of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD).  All 9-1-1 calls from Davidson are routed to CMPD Communications where highly trained telecommunicators answer the calls and determine if police, fire, or medical assistance is needed.  Listen carefully and fully answer their questions to insure that the correct emergency services (police, fire, or EMS) are sent to you.

All CMPD telecommunicators are trained as 9-1-1 call-takers and police dispatchers and experienced in handling emergencies of all kinds.  They rotate between roles every week in order to maintain their skills and proficiency in each role.  For 9-1-1 calls requesting police assistance, CMPD call-takers gather information from the caller and pass the information electronically to the CMPD North Division radio dispatcher who then dispatches Davidson police in response to the call.  Callers requesting fire or medical assistance are transferred to Medic who dispatches fire and/or medical assistance as needed.

Over 75% of all 9-1-1 calls received in North Carolina are wireless calls.  Cell phone towers may route a 9-1-1 call to another emergency communications center (PSAP) depending on the physical location.  While uncommon, all PSAPs are capable of determining the correct PSAP a caller needs and routing the call quickly to the appropriate center.

Voice over IP (VoIP) phone systems are also available from Internet and cable providers, but 9-1-1 calls can be misdirected by the provider equipment.  If you have a VoIP phone service, you should provide your internet or cable provider with your current address in order to insure that your 9-1-1 call will be routed to CharMeck911.  This information is vital for the current 9-1-1 systems using ANI/ALI (Automatic Number Identification/Automatic Location Identification) to identify the phone number and location of the caller.  We also recommend that you clearly state to the 9-1-1 call-taker that you are calling for an emergency in the Town of Davidson.
